Quiet Day

After a rather fitful night of sleep, I welcomed today’s recovery-focused day. Nothing major on the training calendar – a 45 minute spin followed by some yoga. Normally I want to do more and more and more – but I welcomed the easy day. My body took a beating with last week’s training crash and these aches and pains were compounded by yesterday’s crash – so my body needs a couple days of tender treatment!

Since nothing really happened today and I don’t have any real deep thoughts about cycling, training, life, and all the bits in between I thought I’d post some photos that have been taken so far this year.

Thanks to all the photographers who have taken photos and sent them to me – it is greatly appreciated.

Aspere-Gavere Cyclocross Race

This was my third season racing the Aspere-Gavere cyclocross race and I guess it is true – the third time is the charm! I had my best race ever on this course. It was a great feeling to see the 1 lap to go card and to hear the bell! I’m content with my race and result, but as always – I want more.

Today, my technical riding skills held me back. I’m not as strong on the descents and in the corners as the other girls – so this really cost me today. There is only so much time I can make up during the climbs and on the flat sections to compensate for my over braking on the descents. But the one good thing was that each lap, I tried to brake less and less and to go faster and take more risks. Apart from one crash which was in a slippery grassy corner – I managed to stay upright!

The race course at Aspere-Gavere has a lot of fast and slightly intimidating descents combined with a long climb, three steep climbs, some false flats, a ditch crossing, and some straight sections. Really this course is not like any cyclocross course in North America. It is a super fun course that has you focused and drilling it at all times.

I’ve written a race report which gives you more in-depth detail about my race today. Suffice it to say – I’m content and looking for more.

I have to say the entire weekend was top-notch. On Saturday I drove to Dilbeek and stayed with Ignace and Katie. Ignace is my super-mechanic and good friend. My intention was to take them out for supper on Saturday night as a way of thanking them for everything – but Ignace wouldn’t let me pay… Anyway we went to a Chinese Wok Buffet restaurant – it was super good and I really liked that I could choose exactly what I wanted and see it being cooked. This morning I was treated some scrambled eggs to go with my normal pre-race breakfast and then Ignace and I were off to the race. After my race and some chilling out with friends it was back to Ignace and Katie’s place to watch the elite men’s race and to have some supper. It was just a great weekend with time spent with friends, cyclocross racing and generally feeling very content.

The only thing that I found hard was not being in Ottawa to see Marc win the Masters 40-49 Ontario Provincial Cyclocross Championship title! I’m super proud of Marc for his race. Many thanks to my dad for being out at the race. Here is a picture my dad took of Marc:

(One more thing about the race today – it was a good thing it was a Typhoon day since I forgot one of my Rhinos here at the house in Blauberg!)

Thanks for the cheering, the photos, the words of encouragement, and the smiles. Hope you had a great day today as well.

DO

When I was in the Czech Republic, Marc sent me a link to the website for the Do Lectures. It is only now that I’ve had the time and opportunity to sit down and watch some of the Do Lecture videos and poke around the Do Village blog.

Suffice it to say, there are some smart folks out there spreading some very useful messages. I suggest you take a look at these two websites – poke around, listen and watch some videos, and take what you do from the experience.

The most recent Do Lecture video, I listened to is called: How To Optimise Yourself.

Anyway, we all find inspiration in different forms – and sometimes it helps to listen to new voices and ideas.

(If you’re out at the Ontario Provincial Cyclocross Championships tomorrow, please cheer loudly for Marc and be sure to give him a hug and a kiss for me!)

Thursday in Photos

A very good day today in Belgium. Easy recovery ride that allowed me to stop and take some photos. Followed this with some chilling out time in Westerlo with Nikoline and Jos. I’ll keep the words brief and let the pictures do the talking:

Belgian architecture is a mix of the old and the new. Here is the new:

Made it to Flipperland – I think it looks better in the summer:

Doubling Up in Belgium

Today was a double day. For you Canadians there was no Tim Hortons involved in this double day. Nope, definitely the sugar-free kind with running in the morning and cyclocross training in the afternoon.

I went out “early” (okay 8:30) for my run and ended up having a great run in the Blauberg forest. For the first time I ran with my heart rate monitor strap on and my Garmin Edge 500 in my jacket pocket. Very interesting to see my heart rate data, speed and distance covered. The run was excellent – well except for the gun shots I heard – I guess it is hunting season right now… I did see one deer bounding through the woods – definitely was moving faster than me.

After a few errands and a spot of food I was in the car and off to Zolder for my first cyclocross training session in Belgium. This year my pal RenĂ© hooked me up with a group that trains at the Zolder race course. I was a bit nervous when I got there but was quickly at ease with a most excellent coach and a good group of people. There were about 80 little kids who went off and did their own training and then maybe 30 of us rode over to Hasselt to train on this Saturday’s race course.

It was a great ride over, zooming along the canal in a big group and I got to talk to Hilde Quintens (a Belgian racer). Nice to get to know some new people and to feel really welcomed. The session at the Hasselt race track was excellent – I got some help with my sand riding skills and was able to work on some other skills as well (in other words – less brake more speed!).

I arrived a bit early to the training location so decided to take my bike out for a bit of a spin on some taped off cyclocross training skills sections… Well, lets just say I have luck on my side! I was riding along when all of a sudden I was flying through the air – turns out I should have stayed left… Where I went the ground literally fell away – I did a massive endo, landing on my shoulder and side of my head. My shoulder is very red and starting to turn blue – and I’m a bit stiff. I felt fine during the ride and I think so long as I stretch well tonight I should be fine! Here is a picture of the drop I went over and how my bike landed – I landed about two feet from my bike!

We were parked next to the BMX track – very impressive – especially watching the little kids zip around (no pics of the little kids though…).

After a quick shower here, Nikoline hit up the nearby cafe for a hot chocolate. Nice to get out and hang out a bit. The Mie Maan is an excellent spot and I’m looking forward to going there with Marc for some supper and relaxation.

Tomorrow I’ve got an easy recovery ride on the schedule. Perfect timing considering today’s tumble!
