Koksijde Update

Well, I’m sitting here in the plush villa that Stefan Wyman arranged for us in De Panne. We’ve got a good group of us here relaxing the night before the World Cup. But the thing is – I won’t be racing tomorrow. Or for a while for that matter…

I crashed during training today and fractured a vertebrae in my spine.

Now I’m going to be okay. I can walk and move around. I’m just in a lot of pain – my back is in spasm, my right thigh is completely numb, and my back plain old hurts. And I’ve got a nasty scrape on my face – first black eye I’ve had in a long time! But my body will heal. The orthopaedic surgeon said it will be about six weeks until I’ve recovered.

So another cyclocross season is over. I think I’m in shock right now.

As for what I do next – I really don’t know. For now I’ll just relax and maybe just maybe I’ll hit up the bakery across the street for a sweet rice tart!

    • Thanks Jay and Dad! I’ll be okay.

Some rice tarts and chocolate tomorrow will ease the temporary pain!

If you see Marc on the weekend, please give him a big hug for me.

      cheers, vicki

  1. You’ve got to be kidding ! ! ! That really REALLY sucks…..
    Thought……
Take lots of pics of the races …. if you can’t race maybe it would help to be there staying in touch with everyone 🙂
Could be much worse things happen as you know so try stay focused on all the positives, as tough as they may be….
    Keep us posted 🙂
    Cheers,
    Paul
p.s. You can pig out on deserts now ! ! !

    • Thanks Paul!

Ya, I’ll have day of dessert eating! Thank goodness they make jeans with spandex in them now!

Good luck this weekend. Give Marc a hug for me.

      cheers, vicki

  2. I wish there was a way that a comment could make a difference here but it’s a long shot. You got hurt doing what most of us dream of but will never get the chance to do. You put yourself out there and took a risk. I have immense respect for all the effort you put in and can only hope that the universe pays you back well for all of the tests you are given and keep passing. Get well soon!

  3. Very happy to hear that you will mend. On the other hand, this is really bad luck during racing season. Take care of yourself. We will be thinking of you.

    Love A&J

  4. The healing should go quick. I had the same injury in the early 80’s. The first week was the worst…much better after that. Get back at it. I may live in Canada but my head spends most of the time in Belgie and you and Mark are part of the connection.

  5. OMG Wow. Am I ever out of the loop.

Hang in there. 6 weeks is a long time but if you’re productive during the recovery, lots of stretching etc, you’ll be back stronger than ever.

    Take care.
